Anderson CVB Reports 24 Pieces of Business Booked
To kickoff 2010, the Anderson Convention and Visitors Bureau reported 24 pieces of business already on the books for the coming years. The business includes 9,193 participants, 7,145 room nights and an economic impact of $857,400. “We are excited about the tourism opportunities that Anderson has to offer, and look forward to another successful year,” said Kathy Benson, executive director of the Anderson CVB. Several of the events will be high profile sanctioned events and fun for the entire family, Benson said. The first weekend in March, the Southern Classic Volleyball tournament will come to Anderson and the Upstate. Anderson will host 1,600 volleyball players, families and friends at the Anderson Civic Center, City of Anderson Recreation Center and McCants Middle School. The Southern Classic is celebrating its 16th year and includes teams from five states. There will also be college coaches on site to sign recruits. This event has an economic impact of $120,000 for Anderson County and the CVB has obtained a three-year commitment from the Southern Classic. On April 17, the Upstate Chili Cook-off Competition will be held in Belton. This is a nationally sanctioned event by the International Chili Society. There will be approximately 20 professional chili cookers and many amateurs competing for the best chili. The first weekend in May, the Anderson Civic Center and Portman Marina will host the American Bass Anglers BBQ Cook-Off Tour. There will be approximately 30 professional chefs and many backyard barbeque teams vying for the best barbeque in the Upstate, as well as cash prizes. This is a weekend event and free to the public. The festivities will begin on April 30 with a Wing Cooking Contest, vendors, children’s area and live music. There will also be a battle of the bands competition, sweet tea competition and more. The anglers will fish out of Portman Marina May 1 and weigh in at the Anderson Civic Center. Portman will also host the 150 Series on Sunday. The weekend of Aug. 13, Lake Hartwell will host the International Jet Sport Boating Competition. This event was a collaboration of the members of the Lake Hartwell Alliance and surrounding communities in promoting Lake Hartwell as a destination. This is a nationally sanctioned event and the winner will go on to the national competition. “We have signed a one-year contract to host this event with the option of hosting the next three years,” Benson said.
